Lodore Canyon is perhaps the most scenic of all the Utah river canyons. The Green River through Lodore Canyon was the first major canyon encountered by Major Powell's historic exploration in 1869. At that time the river was undammed and provided Powell and crew with rapids and hardships that today are only a memory. Todays Lodore Canyon river rafting experience does not come with the hardships encountered by Powell and his men. But even though the rapids named on this historic trip—Disaster Falls, Hell's Half Mile, Triplet—may not be as large as they once were, they still provide us with a pucker factor that can vary from three to ten. With lower water the rapids become more technical and intense maneuvering is required. A little adrenaline is part of the overall experience, and a tall, cool frosty one is really appreciated afterwards. |
